ICRC Appoints Ted Barna to Lead Clean Fuels Efforts
ALEXANDRIA, VA – May 23, 2007 – Integrated Concepts & Research Corporation (ICRC), a diversified technical and management services company, announced today that Dr. Ted Barna has been appointed manager for the Assured Fuels Initiative programs. Dr. Barna will expand ICRC’s scope of services in the area of ultra-clean fuels research and support a national initiative to increase the country’s use of domestic energy resources and reduce its dependency on foreign oil..
Most recently, Dr. Barna served five years in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) as an Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (ADUSD) for Advanced Systems and Concepts. In that capacity, he supervised the development of emerging unconventional fuel resources for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). Dr. Barna worked closely with other government and private entities to support and promote the production of non-petroleum based fuels, with the ultimate goal of increasing fuel efficiency, reducing military fuel consumption, and reducing dependency on foreign oil.
ICRC has long been at the forefront of ultra-clean fuels research for the Federal government and was awarded the largest contract under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Ultra-Clean Transportation Fuels Program. Working with its partner Syntroleum, ICRC was the prime contractor under the DOE program, which funded the design, construction and initial operations of a small footprint plant that produces ultra-clean Fischer-Tropsch (FT) diesel fuel from natural gas. For numerous government agencies, including the DOE, the Federal Transit Administration and the U.S. Army, ICRC has evaluated the performance of FT fuels in a variety of diesel engines. ICRC is currently in the early stages of performing work related to the production of ultra-clean diesel fuel from coal.
“Dr. Barna was the driving force in the Pentagon for promoting the benefits of domestically produced Fischer-Tropsch fuels to the military,” said Jim Lexo, president and CEO of ICRC. “Thanks to his efforts, DOD and, in particular, the Air Force, is examining the performance of ultra-clean fuels and is expected to certify the fuel in the coming years.”
Dr. Barna said, “I am a big proponent of ultra-clean fuels for the military. Through the coal-to-liquids process, the United States can produce a clean diesel fuel, not only for the military, but also for our domestic truck and bus fleets. It will provide energy security and it is also far superior to regular diesel fuel from an environmental standpoint.”
A former U.S. Air Force pilot, instructor pilot, and flight evaluator, Dr. Barna holds a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology and a Masters of Education in science curriculum development, both from the University of South Carolina. He earned a BA in biology from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas.
